In an endeavour to bring together the African AI ecosystem under one roof, the 1st AI Africa Conference is conceptualized & organized by collaborative efforts of The Circuit Media, a major player in the media and events industry on the African continent, and Machine Intelligence Institute of Africa , a nonprofit organization that acts as an innovative community and accelerator for Machine Intelligence and Data Science Research and Applications to help transform Africa.

The first AI Africa Conference is going to be held during 26th – 27th October, 2017. It is slated to be a platform for AI learners & practitioners to network, share knowledge, and inspire other AI aspirants in progressing towards an AI-first world. Mr. Irvine Makuyana, is the Conference Cordinator, and he is in-charge of overseeing the events throughout the period of the Conference.

The event is uniquely designed to be interactive in nature, and diverse in delivery. High emphasis has been given on innovations in AI that are being implemented at enterprise level, and an intense networking is being facilitated for all players involved in enabling the adoption of AI in businesses.

Dr. Jacques Ludik, Founder & CEO, Machine Intelligence Institute Africa (MIIA), Cortex Logic

Dr Jacques Ludik is a smart technology entrepreneur, AI expert, investor & ecosystem builder and currently Founder & President of Machine Intelligence Institute of Africa (MIIA), Founder & CEO of Cortex Logic, Founder & CTO of Bennit.AI, Founder of SynerG, Director at The Student Hub (ERAOnline). He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science (AI) has 25+ years’ experience in AI & Data Science (DS) and its applications. He was previously VP DS & CDO at Jumo, Founder & Executive Director of CSense Systems (which he sold to General Electric); Big Data Analytics Leader & Director at GE, & Senior Lecturer at Stellenbosch University. Jacques was also Senior Lecturer & Researcher at Stellenbosch University, where dozens of his papers on AI were published in Journals and International Conferences as well as a book published by Cambridge University Press (UK). Jacques holds a B.Sc (Cum Laude), Hons.B.Sc. (Cum Laude), M.Sc. (Cum Laude), and PhD degrees from Stellenbosch University.

Dr. Benjamin Rosman, Principal Researcher: Mobile Intelligent Autonomous Systems Centre for Scientific & Industrial Research

Dr. Benjamin Rosman is a principal researcher in the Mobile Intelligent Autonomous Systems researcher group at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa, and is also a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he runs the Robotics, Autonomous Intelligence and Learning Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. degree in Informatics from the University of Edinburgh in 2014, and previously obtained his M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence from the same university. His research interests focus primarily on learning and decision making in autonomous systems, in particular how learning can be accelerated through generalising knowledge gained from solving related problems. He additionally works in the area of skill and behaviour learning and transfer for robots. Currently, he serves as the Chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers SA joint chapter of Control Systems, and Robotics & Automation.

Kugendran Naidoo, Cognitive Business & Strategy (Africa | Middle East), IBM WATSON

Kugendran Naidoo is an IBMer and enthusiastabout business, technology and life. He has spent 20 years as consultant and businessman, specializing in Analytics before transitioning into AI. He is usually not far from exciting and challenging engagements, with diverse interests that include industry and research. An avid reader of both strategy and comics - plus a has been sportsman and recovering developer.

Ankur Dinesh, CEO - HOTIFY (India)

Ankur Dinesh is CEO at Hotify; a company offering democratised Artificial Intelligence products and tools enabling global usage of AI in Action. He advises great founders and AI companies, among them Comezzo, Mantra Ai, I Am Wire among others. Ankur also served briefly as CEO at Iamwire - India's fastest growing online destination for Digital news, information and insights. He is a Co-Founder & Director of AllSchoolStuff.com, India's 1st School & Learning Store. Prior, Ankur spent a few years with ANMsoft beginning 2003, where he served in many roles and assumed responsibilities, starting as IT Manager, then Business Analyst, Delivery Manager, Project Manager then finally Business Development in which he took responsibility as Business Manager, Business Head, Head of Operation (Delhi Office), VP Sales & Marketing and VP Global Business Development.

Reshaad Sha, CEO – Sqwidnet

As CEO of SqwidNet, Reshaad is entrusted with building an IoT connectivity business in South Africa in partnership with the global IoT network operator, Sigfox. He also serves as the Chief Strategy Officer at DFA where he is responsible for Corporate Strategy, Product Innovation and long term business planning. SqwidNet is a wholly owned subsidiary of DFA that will roll out a nationwide open access IoT network to provide a connectivity platform that will enable industries across South Africa to participate in the digitisation shift that is upon us. Reshaad has held various director-level positions primarily in the telecommunications industry, which afforded him the opportunity to work closely with many leading telecommunications operators in the USA, South Africa, across the Middle-East and Africa, Russia, Turkey, and South East Asia. Reshaad holds an executive MBA from UCT’s graduate school of business.

Aalia Manie, Lawyer: Intellectual Property & Technology, Webber Wentzel

Aalia Manie is an intellectual property (IP) and technology lawyer at Webber Wentzel and serves on the Community Council of the Silicon Cape Initiative. She is one of the M&G's Top 200 Young South Africans for 2017. Aalia specialises in commercial IP deals and is passionate about innovation and the future of law. She advises companies on how to protect, structure and monetise their IP and technology. She also drives national advocacy campaigns aimed at influencing changes to law and policy. Aalia shared insights on AI and Law; published in SA.

Dr. Adebayo Bamitale, Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence System | Cyber Security

Dr Adebayo Bamitale holds a PhD in Information Science from the Africa Regional Centre for Information Science (ARCIS), University of Ibadan, Nigeria. His PhD was on Human Factors in AI Development and Use. He works as a Software Engineer with Wonga Ltd in London and on Cyber Security at the School of Engineering and Environment Northumbria University London Campus. His current interests include Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence System in Cyber Security.
